I rewatched episode 8 of Angel, “I Will Remember You.” This is a great episode showcasing forbidden love and I just really like it. The theme I’m exploring is; what really makes us happy? And why do we want? To sumarize the show again, Buffy, Angel’s long time love returns. They can never be together though because he is a vampire but she is a vampire slayer. So Buffy comes to visit, and during their first conversation together, an intruder attacks and Buffy and Angel start a battle. The intruder, later to be known as a mortal demon, escapes and Buffy and Angel must fight him again. During Angel’s battle with him, Angel gets scraped on the hand and the mortal demon gets cut, and the demon blood mixes with Angel’s blood. After, Angel is mortal. Mortal demon turns him mortal, funny huh?
Angel and Buffy get what they’ve always wanted, to be together. During their time together Buffy says, “This is the first time I’ve ever felt this way...” Angel asks, “What way?” She replies, “Just like I’ve always wanted to, like a normal girl.” Buffy is happy, satisfied, to get what she’s always dreamed about. Angel realizes though they can never be together, “If we stay together one of us will end up dead. How can we be together if the cost is your life or the lives of others?” There are more demons coming and Buffy can’t fight them by herself. Angel approaches the oracles and demands that they save her. The oracles explain they can’t just give a life without taking one. He responds, “Take my life back.” They argue that what’s done is done, but then they realize, “This one is willing to sacrafice every drop of human happiness and love he’s ever known for another, he is not a lower being.” Time is turned back 24 hours so he can undo everything. Angel’s love for Buffy demonstrates that what makes us happy isn’t what we want. Then why do we want so much?
