On Commonplace, I read the article titled, “Diversity or Discrimination?” It was about the various diversity efforts on campus, but really they are discriminating the majority. The author stated that before we can have true diversity, we have to treat everyone equally. This is a very good point. Everyone is trying to get strait to diversity because that’s what attracts the people with the money, but really it should be about equality. I think all races can relate to this article, but I think I can in a couple of ways. First, I live in Taylor Tower, and I’m pretty sure ALL the Chinese people (the ones that JUST came from China) live here, and my roommate is from China. So this is like the learning communities around campus that the author talked about. I see why someone decided to put all the Chinese together, but it’s probably a lot worse for them. I don’t know about all the Chinese here, but my roommate doesn’t have that good of English. I mean it’s far better than any language I can learn, but it’s not perfect. She will ask me questions what words mean and it’s hard to have a simple conversation with her ever. So I know what it’s like to be across the world and just want to see something familiar, but I think it would be better if they would meet other people that spoke English. Another example comes from home. I was in band, and there was a group of us that are all attending Ohio State. One of us got LOWER test scores and lived in a NICER house. He is African-American; can you guess which one isn’t paying for tuition?
