So I kind of have a while to go on my paper I feel like because I haven’t really established my real world connection yet. Luckily I feel like I’m pretty close to my argument, it’s just once I have my real world connection I’ll be able to define it more clearly.
So I’m still dealing with Angel and how he went from getting a chance of a lifetime to be with the love of his life Buffy as a human, to returning to be a vampire. This is quite odd behavior so I decided to look at it a little closer. I went from thinking that the writers thought it was bad for people to return to who they were, to saying it’s good for people to return to who they are.
So the first part of my argument is that people sacrifice the thing they want most to remain the same and to keep their identity. The second part of my argument is asking if this is bad. Is it bad to make sacrifices and to stop the personal growth? I’m hoping I’ll be able to find some research about personal growth and when it’s important of necessary and when it is good to stay the same.
So for my real world example, I need someone or group that sacrifices something in order to remain the same. I’ve looked at devoted high school athletes that get injured, but they didn’t want to get injured so they didn’t really sacrifice anything. I’ve looked at women who get a ton of plastic surgery; they sacrifice their self-esteem to appear young. And I’ve looked at workaholics. They sacrifice their family in order to perpetually work, but I don’t know how much that affects their personal growth verses general quality of life.
I think workaholics are my best real world example, but I still don’t think I’ve found the quintessential example for my argument yet.
